Abstract:
Russia's invasion of Ukraine beckons the international community to adjust international law further, to deter future wars of aggression. One way to do that is to finally do an obvious thing that should have been done after World War II: make peace an actionable fundamental human right. This lecture will discuss both how to do that and the benefits of doing so.
Chile Eboe-Osuji was president of the International Criminal Court in The Hague until March 2021. Prior to his appointment to the ICC, he served as the legal advisor to United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay. Currently, Eboe-Osuji is 'Distinguished International Jurist' and 'Special Advisor to the President’ at Lincoln Alexander School of Law at Toronto Metropolitan University and Paul Martin Sr. Professor at University of Windsor. In 2021, he was awarded the Goler -T. Butcher Medal of the American Society of International Law.
