Prison environ&shy;ments can have traumatizing effects on con&shy;fined people. Long prison sentences have no positive impact on relapses on criminal be&shy;hav&shy;ior. Such draw&shy;backs clearly reflect an institu&shy;tional and societal failure to fulfill the individual justice and public safety goals of legal punish&shy;ment.&rdquo;
