Special Issue 2021: The Principle of Solidarity During and Beyond Covid-19
The Covid-19 crisis has raised issues of solidarity in many areas. Whether it is the distribution of IC beds, the unequal consequences for, among other groups, flex workers and migrants, the distribution of the debt burden among member states within the EU, or the global hunt for a vaccine, questions arise about the scope and significance of solidarity between human beings, generations or societies. Beyond corona, we encounter a similar focus on solidarity in debates about the sustainability of pensions and in the context of climate change and global warming, the damaging consequences of which will particularly hit the younger and future generations. As compared to the enlightenment ideals of freedom (‘liberté’) and equality (‘égalité’), the solidarity principle as a translation of ‘fraternité’ (‘fraternity’) usually comes off poorly. This special issue hopes to change that, by bringing together articles on the solidarity principle and on current societal cases around and beyond Covid-19.
