DESCRIPTION:The concentration of legislative\, executive\, and judicial p
owers within online platforms raises profound questions about how they inf
luence society. The assumption of state-like powers by companies such as
Meta\, Google\, X\, and TikTok invites critical examination of their im
pact on fundamental rights\, governance\, and democracy.

DESCRIPTION:Digitalisation poses significant risks to the preservation of d
emocracy. In particular\, the manipulation of public elections through dee
pfakes and social bots raises the question of whether such activities shou
ld be criminalised. At the same time\, criminal policy must continue to me
et fundamental requirements of the rule of law\, even in the face of such
new challenges. The conference on 19 and 20 June 2026 will present the res
ults of a comparative legal study of 14 EU Member States and the criminal
 policy guidelines based on them.

DESCRIPTION:This talk explores how contemporary political and academic disc
ourse is being shaped by the expansion of concepts used to describe aspe
cts of human vulnerability. Psychological terms such as trauma\, anxiety\,
and depression\, as well as moral categories like violence\, hate\, d
iscrimination\, and oppression\, have been extended to cover an even wider
range of experiences. As a result\, individuals increasingly appear more
vulnerable\, and an increasing number of situations are interpreted thro
ugh the lens of harm.\nSpeaker: Prof. Dr. Maria-Sibylla Lotter (Ruhr Unive
