On Tiptoe – Criminal Law in the Crosswinds of Authoritarian Populism
Verfassungsblog and the Max Planck Institute Initiate Renewed Round of Blog Symposium
The Verfassungsblog and the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law have launched a new joint blog symposium entitled “Zart im Nehmen – Das Strafrecht in Zeiten des autoritären Populismus” (On Tiptoe – Criminal Law in the Crosswinds of Authoritarian Populism).
In their contributions, the authors seek to examine whether and, if so, how criminal law can be used to protect democracy and where the limits of this instrumentalization lie. The longstanding tension between criminal law and politics has long been a topic of debate – the new blog symposium aims to shed light on this tension. It examines how resilient criminal law is against authoritarian attempts to appropriate it and where the powers of criminal law are overestimated as an instrument for safeguarding a robust democracy.

In September 2024, the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law (MPI-CSL) and the Verfassungsblog (VB) created a new thematic cluster called VB Security and Crime: A Cooperation Project of VB and MPI-CSL. The aim of this collaboration is to discuss current topics in security law and criminal law, engaging as many scholars as possible with diverse perspectives. The project is being complemented by an annual blog symposium.
The Verfassungsblog is an open access forum on current events and developments in constitutional law and policy. Articles on the blog are published in German and English.
