Inaugural Workshop in Freiburg
The 1st Annual Workshop of the Max Planck Center for Democracy, Security and Human Rights has come to a close.
We are delighted that the workshop brought together scholars from the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law and from the Minerva Center for Human Rights at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem to discuss diverse perspectives on democracy, security, and human rights, including topics such as freedom of expression, policing, emergency law, and minority rights. The event was also attended by representatives of the Hertie Foundation and the Volkswagen Foundation that are supporting the project.
The Max Planck Center for Democracy, Security and Human Rights was established to address how democracy, human rights, and security can be reconciled and strengthened in an age of growing threats. It is a joint initiative of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law in Freiburg and the Minerva Center for Human Rights at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The Center was officially opened at the Hebrew University in November 2025.
