Where Do You See Yourself in 10 Years?
DW podcast spotlights the FutureU project
DW’s latest episode of the “Science Unscripted“ podcast features our research project FutureU, which explores how people mentally project themselves into the future – and why this matters for personal growth and mental health.
By being visually exposed to your future self and interacting with it in VR, people experience the future as more concrete and vivid, explains Jean-Louis van Gelder to DW reporter Conor Dillon. “We know from studies that when future states are more vivid in our minds, we are more likely to actively work towards them.”
One group that may particularly benefit from future-self interventions is young offenders. “This group tends to be extremely short-sighted. And a short-time mindset is one of the main predictors of delinquency”, Jean-Louis van Gelder explains. When immediate rewards overshadow distant consequences, it is easy to be enticed by the quick win of some cash or thrill. This is where the FutureU project comes in; to help young offenders reflect on the long-term consequences of their actions, and ideally change their behavior.
The implications extend beyond the lab: The insights can inform coaching, education, and mental‑health interventions by helping people transform abstract aspirations into actionable plans.
